ROCK FIELD

Score 0 Best 0 Lives 3
Newton in a black square.
How to play
  1. Left and right rotate the ship, up fires the thruster, space shoots.
  2. Big rocks split into medium ones, medium into small — small ones vanish.
  3. The screen wraps: fly off one edge and you appear on the other.
  4. Shift triggers a hyperspace jump to a random spot — useful, but it can drop you into a rock.

Era: 1979
Keyboard: rotate-thrust-shot

About this game

Rock Field is a momentum shooter drawn in glowing vector lines. You pilot a small triangular ship in an open field of drifting rocks. Shooting a large rock does not remove it — it breaks into two medium rocks, and each of those breaks into two small ones, so a tidy screen turns into a swarm the moment you get impatient.

Rotate with left and right, thrust with up, and fire with space; touch players get dedicated rotate, thrust and fire buttons. Your ship keeps every bit of velocity you give it, so flying well means thrusting in short taps and spending most of your time coasting and aiming. The screen wraps on all four edges, which is both an escape route and a way to get ambushed by something you already flew past.

Large rocks score 20, medium 50 and small 100, so the points are in the debris you are trying to survive. Enemy saucers cross the field periodically and shoot back — the small saucer aims directly at you and is worth 1000.

The advice that saves runs: clear one rock completely, including all its fragments, before touching the next one, and keep your speed low enough that you can always reverse. Hyperspace is a last resort, not a movement option. Vector-line space shooters defined the look of the late 1970s arcade and still feel unlike anything else in the hall.

FAQ

Why does my ship keep sliding?

There is no brake. Thrust adds momentum and nothing removes it, so you slow down by turning around and thrusting the other way.

What is the hardest part?

The debris. Clearing big rocks is easy; surviving the eight small fast ones they leave behind is the game.

Touch controls?

Yes — rotate buttons, a thrust button and fire.
