About this game

Balloon Popper is a room-clearing action game with one weapon and one rule. Balloons bounce around a single screen on fixed parabolic arcs. Your harpoon fires straight up, and any balloon it hits splits into two smaller ones — until the smallest size, which pops for good.

You move left and right with the arrow keys and fire with space; on touch it is left, right and a fire button. The critical restriction is that only one harpoon exists at a time, so a shot that misses leaves you defenceless until it reaches the ceiling and disappears. That single limitation is what turns a simple shooting game into a positioning puzzle.

Because a hit doubles the number of objects on screen, the difficulty of a room peaks in the middle rather than at the start. Splitting a large balloon over your own head is the classic mistake — the two halves land on either side of you and close in. The correct approach is to shoot from the side, keep the biggest balloons on one half of the screen, and clear the small fast ones first when they multiply.

Later rooms add platforms, ladders and hazards that change the bounce geometry, plus power-ups such as a double shot and a hanging harpoon. Single-screen split-the-target games were a small but well-loved arcade format at the end of the 1980s.

FAQ

Why can I only fire one harpoon?

Because the game is about positioning, not rate of fire. The harpoon stays on screen until it hits something or reaches the ceiling.

What is the safest place to stand?

Directly under a large balloon at the top of its bounce — it takes the longest to come back down there.

Are there power-ups?

Yes: a double harpoon, a sticky harpoon that hangs from the ceiling, and a shield that absorbs one hit.
