About this game

Burger Stack is a platform maze with a construction objective. The screen is a lattice of walkways and ladders with burger ingredients suspended across them, and four plates at the bottom. Walking the entire length of an ingredient makes it fall to the level below; stack a bun, a patty, lettuce and a top bun on a plate and that burger is done.

Arrow keys walk and climb, space throws pepper, and touch players get the pad plus a throw button. You cannot fight the food enemies that chase you along the same walkways — pepper only stuns them for a couple of seconds, and you carry a limited supply. Movement planning is everything: you want to be walking ingredients that lead you away from a chaser, not into one.

The scoring trick is that ingredients can carry passengers. If an enemy is standing on a section when it drops, it rides down with it and is squashed, worth far more than a normal drop; catch several at once and the bonus is enormous. A falling ingredient also pushes through the ingredients below it, so a well-timed drop from the top row can cascade an entire burger onto the plate in one move.

Each cleared stage adds faster chasers and a busier layout. Platform mazes with a build-the-thing goal were an unusual and welcome twist on the chase formula in the early 1980s.

FAQ

How do I get more pepper?

Collect the bonus items that appear in the middle of the stage. Running out with two chasers on your tail is how most runs end.

Can I use enemies to my advantage?

Yes. An ingredient with an enemy on it falls further and scores much more, so baiting a chaser onto a bun is the biggest scoring play.

Is it a cooking game?

Not really. It is a platform maze that uses food as its layout.
